Needles and Teething - 18 Month Fun

Can I just say I am so READY for this week to be over. With only one week left of work, mat leave can not come soon enough!

It's been a cranky and sleep-deprived few days in our house. It all started Sunday evening when Noah came home exhausted from his night away at his Grandparent's. Exhaust them, feed them ice cream and pie for dinner, and home they go! ha. We bathed him and put him right to sleep and when he woke up Monday he was in much better spirits. When I picked him up Monday at daycare, Heather told me they all seemed to be a bit off that day. Noah's BM (sorry for TMI) were painful for him, and he seemed out of sorts.

My poor pitiful little man

He woke up Tuesday, cranky and upset. Great timing I thought, we have his 18 month needles this morning. He cried most of his appointment, long before she gave him his 3 needles. We also noticed him chewing on his fingers really hard. After his needles I sent him back to daycare, with Advil and the thermometer in his bag and instructions to give him any if he spiked a temp or seemed to be 'off'.

I picked him up early that day, and he was crying and upset even though they were outdoors, his favorite place in the world. Heather had given him Advil not long before. You could tell his arms were sore, and he ate little to nothing at supper. We put him to bed and hoped for the best, but by 10pm I had already been in to rock him back to sleep multiple times. At 10pm he had a high fever, he was lethargic and pitiful. This time Tylenol, a few minutes of rocking and back to his crib. Between 12-4am he was up every 45 minutes crying and inconsolable, the poor guy. Tim and I alternated going in, and he was always quick to go back down but would wake again just as I was getting myself back to sleep. At 4am I gave him more advil, and he slept until 7am.

It was apparent when he woke up that he was  not feeling well. Nor was I for that matter from lack of sleep. I took him into bed with me and we watched the Ipad most of the morning. He wasn't at all interested in his smoothie or his favorite muffins I made him for breakfast. He had a few raisins for a snack and a few sips of some apple juice which I gave him to try and keep him hydrated. At 11:30 I gave him an early lunch, his favorite grilled cheese and avocado. He cried and refused to eat, so I gave in and put him down for his nap at 11:45.

Tim spent the afternoon with him so I could come in to work for a bit. They spent some time outside, and he seemed to be ok when I got home but that didn't last long. He refused to eat one bite of supper and once again was crying and biting on his finger (he broke skin from chewing so hard). I gave him another dose of Tylenol and we put him to bed at 6:15. He was out within minutes, and I followed not far behind him.

Baby Einstein and wubby make everything better...oh and snuggles with Dada of course!

He woke up shortly after 7pm in a sweat, just covered. But he didn't feel hot, so I opened his window and rocked him back to sleep. He ended up having a good night, and slept until 7:30am this morning. He woke up in good spirits, but again no appetite for his favorite muffins at breakfast. I am hoping he has a good day at daycare and that the worst is over.

Normally the vaccines don't bother him at all. I'm not sure if it is just a combination of the teeth and being overtired or what the issue is. I am thankful that is the last round of vaccinations until he is 4, and hope these 2 year molars make their appearance sooner rather than later. This tired mama needs her sleep!!

Bumpdate: 35 Weeks

This week totally flew by. It was a long weekend here, and we were on the go the entire time! Noah kept us outside and on the move from sun-up to sun-down and literally flew into a fit everytime we tried to bring him inside. I even managed to get a little sunburn from being at the park for two days in a row.

Having a hard time getting comfortable in the evenings. Lying on the couch just isn't comfy anymore. Rocking Noah is also hard at bedtime, I find it really hurts my back. Somehow I can still lower him into his crib without too much effort. Peeing a tonne. I like to think I am not waddling yet, but that's likely wishful thinking.

Lucky to be loving being pregnant, and trying to enjoy these last few weeks of what could be my last pregnancy...tear. I'm not expecting anything at this point, but I really think this baby may come early!

How Far Along?
35 weeks, 6 days. So not ready for this, I think I am in denial that we are so close to meeting our baby. Feeling very little nerves/anxiety at this point about L&D...I am sure that will change but for now it seems so far off.
Weight Gain? 30lbs as of today
How Do I Feel?
Tired! Either allergies or my sinuses are acting up. Oh and Noah is going through something too, started out with a runny nose on the weekend and then last night he was up for over 2 hours crying and whining. I don't know if its the 2 year molars or if he wasn't feeling well, but it's taking its toll on Mama. I expected my BP to be a bit high today, but still normal at 120/74.
Maternity clothes?
Busted out my summer mat clothes over the weekend, shorts and skirts and capris. We had a warm sunny weekend, so it was nice to wear shorts again. Trying to not buy anything else at this point.
Sleep?
I had one excellent night sleep this week, I had such a bad headache and was so tired I went to bed at 8:30 and slept until after 7am.
Movement?
I feel like the baby is still lying horizontally at times. I am not getting a lot of movement up near my ribcage, which I did a lot of the time with pregnancy #1. Hiccups about once a day, sometimes more. And if I get up to pee at night, forget going back to sleep. Baby wakes up and decides its time to have a dance party in my belly.
Names?
Haven't discussed names at all this week, so no progress!
Best moment this week?
I took last Friday off  work and treated myself to a pedicure in between chores and housework. Tim's sister and Mom also gave our house a spring cleaning over the weekend, aren't they wonderful! The place has never looked so bright and shiny.
Symptoms?
No more tightenings or contractions this week. Slight swelling of my feet two evenings this week, and I took my wedding and engagement rings off this week just to be on the safe side. Still lucky enough to have avoided heartburn!
Miss anything?
Fit arms. These flabby arms are driving me crazy!
Cravings?
Peanut Buster Parfaits from Dairy Queen.
Looking forward to?
The weekend! Noah is going for a sleepover with his Grandparents, and it will be lovely to have a little sleep-in on Sunday :)

One Year and Beyond - Mommy Guilt

My husband, bless his hard working heart, has a standing engagement each and every season of the year. For instance, during the winter...he plays hockey every Wednesday and Sunday evening. During the summer, he plays golf every Thursday afternoon. And in the off months, he manages to squeeze in two games of squash a week in the wee hours of the morning.  He gets together with his friends and leaves the house and does man things which doesn’t involve wives or houses or kids or work of any kind and it’s almost like frolicking in a meadow except add more ice and pucks and sticks and over-testosteroned men with more beer belly than six pack. (sorry guys, but let’s be real…) So he plays sports, is what I am saying. If you can call ice time at 10:20pm followed by drinking beer an actual sporting activity...but I digress.
Let me paint a picture for you here: I get home at 4:30 with Noah in tow…I hug/kiss/tidy/cook/organize/play until Daddy gets home at 5pm. Hopefully the dinner is cooked and we’re able to be sitting at the table by 5:30. Then we attempt some kind of family dinner and activity until its bathtime and bedtime.  And then, I am too darn tired to do much of anything.
Sigh...I used to be so good at doing my own thing. Even after Noah was born when he was a baby I'd make time in the evenings for a run, or yoga class, a few times a week even! But then I went back to work...and I became pregnant again...
And now I'm a full-time Mama, a full-time wife, sister and friend. And I work full-time! That's a lot of titles to handle.
I don't LOVE my current job, but I love working full-time. It's what works for me. Now that baby #2 is about to arrive, I may feel differently about this. Packing up two kids under 3 and herding them off to daycare each day may be more than this mama can handle. But for now, I NEED to work. It's my sanity saver. It's reality. I need to work, my family needs me to work, and I don't feel all that bad about it. Noah LOVES daycare, he loves Heather, he loves his little friends, he loves his routine. Yes some days I think to myself Noah spends more time at Heather's house than he does his own. He naps more frequently there than in his own crib. She basically has the reigns on discipline, and nourishment, and everything else that comes with raising a child. We're basically co-parenting, Thank goodness we love her and know without a doubt that she loves our little man. There is nobody we'd trust more with raising our child...and that is important!
Mommy Guilt...
Like Elizabeth over at Chasin' Mason, it's not the weekday/leaving my child at daycare, wishing I could be a stay-at-home Mom that makes me feel guilty. It's that weekend guilt that gets me.
Such a short period of time those weekends are, and I want to spend time with my family, make time for friends and family, run errands and get groceries, and make some "me" time. If I do make "me" time, I feel like I am always rushing home. I don't know why. Hubs encourages me to get out and do whatever I please, he never says no, and I know Noah loves his Daddy time, but for whatever reason I feel like I am always cutting things short to rush home to my boys. I feel the need to ask "permission". So more often than not, I plan things on my lunch break, or I do things after work and before I pick Noah up from daycare, or I'll take an afternoon off from work and clean the house or go for a pedicure or get the groceries so that on the actual weekend we can spend more time as a family.
But wouldn't it be nice to have a standing engagement! A standing engagement which has a purpose and takes me out of the house for no longer than a few hours but at precisely the right time that I don’t have to fight the bedtime battle just once a week.  This week I actually got back to pre-natal yoga for the first time in weeks and Tim had Noah in bed for me after I got home, and it was delightful. I love bedtimes with my boy, but having one night of was so refreshing.
I can think on one hand how many times Noah has been away from me for any length of time (I'm talking like for a full-day). Since we breastfed for an entire year, he spent very few days or even evenings away from me. And now that we are beyond that, we do things as a family. It's just how we roll...
So why is it so hard for me to make time for myself? Is it that I feel like I get time to myself at work/lunch and therefore renounce my entitlement to it after work? Is it that I’m trying to reign in all the family time I can get- sadly, mostly out of guilt that I would once a week for a few hours, like to be somewhere else? I know there is encouragement from my husband to take some time out for me. I know that “I get a lunch break” is not an excuse to ignore my personal needs. So why is it so hard to get from Point A of wanting private down time, to Point B of stepping out of the house?
So there you have it, a very real post on the type of "Mommy Guilt" that gets to me. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no advice or ways to overcome this. But I do find that our group of girl friends got in the habit this winter of booking monthly girls suppers, and we book the night a month in advance. It's working our so well, and it helps that we plan it so far in advance so it's easier to arrange for sitters.
I can't wait to read the other posts in this series from other Mama's. Happy Thursday!

Truths of the Week...

1. I don't flush the toilet during nap time. I think other Mama's feel me on this one, nap time is sacred time around these parts and I am not messing that up!

2. I have been enjoying an Iced Capp a day lately from Tim Hortons...and I don't feel guilty.

3. I haven't 'worked out' in weeks. Actually, it may be longer than weeks. Chasing a toddler and the occasional walk is about all I've had time for lately. These flabby arms won't be thanking me this summer...

4. Family naps on Sundays are part of our regular routine. They are ah-mazing.

5. I spent longer than I care to admit yesterday trying to restore my Iphone who quit mid-update and wouldn't turn on. And turns out, I didn't have a backup. Luckily my photos were on my Icloud. But bye bye emails, apps, and contact info.

6. At 35 weeks pregnant, I spent 3 hours painting our basement last evening. Not the smartest thing I've ever done, and I could barely walk when I finished, but man did it feel good to make some progress down there!

7. My prediction for the Voice this season: Christina Grimmie all the way. She's going to #win. I also don't mind Adam Levine's new blond hair...he can totally pull it off.

8. It takes me a solid 2 minutes to decide what my child should wear every morning. His wardrobe is insane. Why can't I have the amount of cool clothes that he does?

9. I've seen the message "iphone storage full, cannot take pictures" on more than one occasion lately. So I've been scrolling through my pics trying to decide which ones to delete, but then decide I can't possibly delete any because my kid is just so darn cute!!

10. We don't have a single newborn diaper, the baby room painted, or a crib delivered. Guilty much? I also haven't given packing my hospital bag a second thought, but it is likely time to throw a few things together. I did, however, order a rug! So there baby, you may not have a place to sleep, but you will have one kick ass rug!

Bumpdate: 34 weeks

How Far Along?
34 weeks, 3 days
Weight Gain? 28 lbs, up 1 lb since my last doctor visit 2 weeks ago.
How Do I Feel?
Busy! So much to do. It was another busy week around our house, Tim worked every night all week and we had to do some clean-up in the basement over the weekend. I was attempting to vacuum the basement and was so sore over 15-20 minutes I had to stop and could barely walk upstairs afterwards.
Maternity clothes?
Nothing new this week, skirts and tunics and tights mostly.
Differences in Pregnancies: This time last pregnancy I was up to 33 lbs. I wasn't sleeping very well, but was already packing my hospital bag and had the nursery basically ready to go!
Sleep?
Noah slept in until almost 8am on Saturday, and after 7am on Sunday for Mother's Day. It was great. I still feel tired a lot of the time, but am more rested than prior weeks.
Movement?
Finally feeling hiccups in there, normally once a day. Lots of jabs, but not a lot of movement at this point.
Names?
Haven't discussed names at all this week, so no progress!
Best moment this week?
I took Friday afternoon off again this week and spent it with Noah. We went for a nice walk with friends and then Tim and I had a much needed and long overdue date night. Tim's sister offered to babysit and it was lovely! However, 2.5 hour movies while 34 weeks pregnant is not ideal. Talk about uncomfortable.
Also, celebrated Mother's Day #2 this weekend and it was so nice.
Symptoms?
Tightening and definite contractions a few times this week. Almost enough to make me stop and say "ow".
Miss anything?
A really good sweaty run. It kills me this time of year to see everyone out jogging on those beautiful spring mornings.
Cravings?
Nothing at all this week.
Looking forward to?
Painting the basement this week! One step closer to being finished. Also, it's Victoria Day long weekend this weekend and the weather is getting up into the 20's! Hello summer!! I think I am going to make it a 4-day long weekend and take Friday off as well :)

Noah is in the "I hate photo" stage. This was the best bump/Noah pic we could get!

Noah: 18 Months

Noah 18 Months as of May 14, 2014

Weight: 27 lbs
Height: 34.5 inches at your 18 month wellness check today.
Clothing: 18-24 months and size 5 diapers.
Shoe size: 4W and 5.
Teeth: 16
Health: another small cold last week (congested) otherwise still so healthy. Still haven't had any antibiotics yet, thanking our lucky stars!!

Oh hello there my little 1.5 year old! What a big boy you are in so many ways, and still my little baby in so many others. You now only have 1 more month of being an only child, that is so bittersweet to me and makes me tear up. You will forever be my little baby, and I am so grateful that it was you my perfect little boy that made me a Mommy for the first time. My sweet, easy and hilarious first born. I feel guilty in many ways that I am robbing you of your "only-child" hood, but also am so excited to watch you and your little brother or sister grow up so close in age.
Big boy with his gelled hair!

What's new this month: Well you had your 4th haircut. That's right folks, my 18 month old wild-child has had his hair cut 4 times thus far in his short little life. And boy did you need it. You obviously gets your crazy hair-ways from your Mama, I have the thickest, curliest and fastest growing hair on the planet. Poor child you are going to spend a fortune in hair-care in your lifetime. We also used gel for the first time to spike your hair for a birthday party this past weekend, what a big boy!

You've discovered airplanes. We live near the airport and they basically fly right over our house, so now when you hear a plane approaching you run to the windows and point. You get especially excited when we are out walking and you get to see one come in that way. You "ohhh" and "ahhh". We also went to the airport to pick Daddy up last week from his work trip. You thought it was pretty cool to run all over the place like a maniac. When Daddy came through the doors you were amazed, the look on your face was priceless. It was like you were thinking "Dad, where the heck did you come from!!?" You were so excited to see him you wouldn't let me anywhere near you, and kept pushing me away.

You LOVE Baby Einstein on the Ipad. In fact, its the only way to keep you still and snuggly for any amount of time. I love our cuddle sessions. You also love to dance, and your favorite song is Happy by Pharrell. If we are in the car driving and it comes on, you start kicking your feet and clapping. If we play it at home, you are a little dancing machine. It is SO cute.

Thing 1, and Thing 2

me and my handsome little man

Oh and tractors. Grampy has a ride-on in his garage which you love to go and sit on. Well we were at Home Depot shopping for BBQ's, which just happened to be next to the ride-on lawn mowers. Well you threw a fit trying to escape the cart and all you wanted to do was sit and examine every John Deere on the premise. What is it about boys and tractors? I couldn't believe you were able to figure out they were the exact same as Grampy's.

I would say we are in the sweet and sour stage of toddler-hood. Some days are AH-mazing. Like we love everything and anything that you do. Other days are a struggle, we count down until naptime. I know you are just frustrated that you aren't able to communicate more, and you just want to get your own way at all times. But the tantrums are a little frustrating. I try to control these, at least when we are out in public, by always bringing a snack with me. Like when we go to the park and have to leave, I bring a bear paw to give you as a form of distraction. Mom of the year award right here (this is likely why so many kids are obese...let's just stuff their little faces to avoid a meltdown). Oh well, your healthy for now.
Testing out our new bathroom sink!

Overall, this age is pretty darn great. You are obsessed with your Dad. Basically are his little shadow if he is home. You run around chanting all over the house "dada, dada, dada". You like to lift up your shirt and look at your belly, and then get Dad to do the same thing like you are comparing belly sizes.

We are no where near potty training, but you understand the concept. You sit on your potty for brief periods, and do so when you see Mom or Dad doing it as well.

You are very detailed oriented. You notice if things are out of place, and say ugh-oh. You like to pick things up and put things away. Especially in your "hoarding cupboard" as we call it. You never know what you may find in the fireplace shelving. You love being outdoors, and would stay out all day long if we let you. You enjoy getting into our cars and beeping the horn. You love your Santa slippers, and always want to put them on (maybe time for a non-seasonal pair?). You also adore this one particular orange colored waffle-shirt, and these brown foot-ball fleece jammies. They are your favorite and you pick them out above all others in your closet.

Hi guys!!

You blow me away with all that you understand. I say "lets go for a bath", and you run to the tub. Or I say "bring me your boots please" and you run and bring me your boots. I also say "do you want milky?" and you run to the fridge and whine. Now if we could just work on your words! Still limited to Mama, Dada, ball, bath, what's that and ugh-oh. We are working on the whole sharing thing. You have been the youngest at daycare, so obviously they let you have everything you want. So on play dates when there are multiple little boys going after the same toy, you turn the bully-mode on.

Other struggles include: teeth brushing, coming in from outside, washing your hands, wiping your nose, or not letting you down to the basement. Your new "bad" thing to do is to crawl onto the top of your toy box and stand up. We've had our fair share of close calls on that thing. You also bring in your foot stool from the washroom to your toybox and then use it as a stool to climb more easily onto the toy box. Oh my goodness child, you are so smart!

He brought this stool all the way from the bathroom all on his own!

Sleeping and Eating: We have had a few rough bedtimes as of late, where you've gone into your crib kicking and screaming an hour past your bedtime. For the MOST part though, you are easy as pie to go to sleep. We start out in the rocker, and you normally point at your crib when you are ready to go in. You then point at your blankey so I can give it to you and cover you up. Then your turn on your aquarium and pop in wubby and you are content. Most nights sleeping 7-7. Naps at home on the weekends, normally all we get is an hour out of you. At daycare, you normally are out for 2+ hours...go figure! One of my favorite things to do is to check on you sleeping before I go to bed for the night {creepy mom alert}. I always cover you up and stop and admire how sweet and adorable you are while you sleep. I just want to scoop you up and cuddle you all night long.

Catching flies

You still love to eat, and for that, I am thankful. You like just about everything we give you. Potato salad is a new fave. We gave you lobster on the weekend,  which I was surprised that you didn't like. Too fishy maybe.  Your favorites are still green smoothies, I am going to add peanut butter this month as you gobble anything covered in that, sweet potato fries, avocado, tuna melts, pancakes, any kind of muffin, hummus, raisins, yogurt. Eating at restaurants is getting interesting. I always bring an arsenal of things to occupy you until the food comes, but you normally end up throwing everything on the floor or hitting other restaurant patrons in the chest with the toys to your father's embarrassment. We won't be rushing out to eat again any time soon with you monkey!

Trying a bite of Dad's take-out burger...no more restaurants for us for awhile!

Thank you for another wonderful month of being your Mama. Love you to bits little man! xoxo

Bumpdate: 33 Weeks

How Far Along?
33.5 weeks, slow down time!!! I can now say that NEXT MONTH we are having a baby...wowzas. Well hopefully at least. I suppose I could be 11 days overdue again next time and have a July baby. But lets hope not!!
Weight Gain? 27 lbs...sigh. Hoping to stay on track here for the next 7 weeks and keep it in under 35 pounds.
How Do I Feel?
Feeling majorly wiped this week. Trying to rest and get as much sleep as possible, but I am feeling like I have hit the wall.
Maternity clothes?
I am loving having some extra pieces in my wardrobe (thank you Kyla) and bought a few regular maxi skirts a few weeks ago that I've been wearing too. I love spring! I am also super happy that I made it through the long old winter wearing my regular coats and not having to splurge on a maternity coat. Today it is chilly out and I have no jackets that I can zip up at this point. Ready for sweater and short sleeve weather!!
Differences in Pregnancies: I still haven't had any heartburn...its the strangest thing. I also had a bit of swelling with Noah in my feet, but haven't had any issues so far. I feel like I am carrying the exact same as I was with Noah...a high round bump!
Sleep?
Can't get enough. Noah had a stuffy nose and wasn't sleeping great this week, so I haven't been either. I was hoping for a few naps this weekend, but Noah only napped an hour both days which didn't allow Mama much time to get anything done.
Movement?
Pretty quiet during the day, but active at night. If I get up to pee overnight, I normally can't get back to sleep because baby decides its time to party. I was lying down over the weekend and baby rubbed his/her arm or leg up against my belly and I could feel the entire bone. It was the strangest thing to be able to feel that long limb!
Names?
You would think we would have made some progress in this department. We have narrowed our boys list down to just 4 names, crossing a few off the list of potentials. Of those 4, I am not sure if there are any that I am absolutely in LOVE with...which is making me doubt them. We are set on our girl name, it hasn't changed since when I was pregnant with Noah.
Best moment this week?
Let's see, I took Friday afternoon off and had a pre-natal massage. It was amazing! I also had a to-do list the length of my arm, and didn't want to spend the weekend running errands so I got a bunch of things done Friday. I also ordered a few things for the nursery.

Sunday Noah and I had some extra-special cuddly moments watching Baby Einstein on the Ipad. Getting him to sit still for longer than 30 seconds is a big deal, so I soaked up every second of our cuddle session.
Symptoms?
Mostly just being tired. If I over-exert I feel some BH and get major tightening...a sign to slow down. I took Noah to the park by myself on the weekend, which was a huge mistake. I don't know how we both made it home alive. The child has no fear, he was launching himself off play structures that were 7+ feet off the ground and i'd have to grab him by his hood at the last second and lower him down to the ground. He nearly gave me a heart-attack/put me in labour on about 5 occasions. I must have hit my belly on metal bars 3 times trying to catch him. Next time...Daddy is coming and Mommy is sitting on the bench and watching!
Miss anything?
A really good sweaty run. It kills me this time of year to see everyone out jogging on those beautiful spring mornings.
Cravings?
I love this time of year for food, lots of ice cream and seafood! Had our first taste of lobster this year on the weekend, it was so good. Mostly just craving the usual, peanut butter and chocolate!
Looking forward to?
Getting our basement done (we can start painting this weekend!!) which means we can then attack the baby's room. Also looking forward to Mother's Day, as I requested a sleep-in until 8am and fully plan on cashing that in :)
