getting his hair styled before hitting the road, i love how content he is!
Well we just returned from our first roadtrip with Noah. Every year both of our families pack up and make the 9 hour trip down to Sugarloaf Maine to ski. We always share a condo and eat like kings, it is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. This year we had a 4 week old. We were unsure whether we were going to attempt the trip until the week before we left. I was definitely a little nervous and anxious...how would baby do in the car to Maine for 9 hours? What if he cried the whole time? We definitely had to contend with a lot of firsts, but guess what? We not only survived, we actually had a great time! Noah did amazing, he really was a little star. He was just just over 4 weeks on the way down, and 5 weeks on the way home. I attribute his young age to how easy he made it on us. I thought I would outline some thoughts and essentials that helped us tremendously during baby's first big trip!
The Essentials Keep Your Sanity: Some people may call us crazy, but not only did we bring the pack n play we also brought our My Little Snugabunny swing (its relatively easy to disassemble). What a LIFESAVER it was. We had left the newborn napper for the pack and play at home and Noah decided to go on strike and not sleep in the pack n play without it. Enter the swing...and tada, (although I am slightly ashamed to say) we put him in there the entire trip at bedtime and he slept like an angel. It also came in handy at supper time when we were all eating (all 14 of us). We just put Noah in there and he slept through all the noise and fun. What a trooper! We opted to leave the stroller behind and bring the snuggli instead, but we never did use it because the weather was so snowy/stormy down there so we didnt get out for any walks. We packed almost an entire pack of diapers, his snowsuit, the sleep sheap, you name it...we had it! We were not going to be unprepared!

Don't be Afraid to Feed Your Child: A baby has to eat! And we were not going to lose any time on the road, so when baby wanted to eat...we fed him and we ate too! I fed him at a restaurant on the way down with my udder cover while I ate my lunch and on the way home, we fed him and changed him in a Wendy's parking lot and also a Tim Horton's parking lot. You gotta do what you gotta do! Baby didn't mind the change of scenery!
More is more, when it comes to clothing: With the fluctuating temperatures travelling we opted to keep Noah in fleece footed-onesies. This kept him warm and covered and then we didn't have to layer him in his seat...a definite plus when traveling.
Bring Your Own Change Pad: You never know what dingy hole-in-the-wall establishments you will be changing your baby. I put the pad down before changing him and it kept him comfy and clean. It also came in handy for the times we had to change him in the front seat!
We bathed Noah in the condo tub, it was hilarious Tim had to get in with him to prop him up. There was no way we were going 6 days without a bath, and baby tubs are not really travelling friendly. I brought along a travel-set of hair wash and lotion to bathe him with.
PS. My husband is wearing underwear, they are just hiked up a bit!!
All Clean!
Last, I brought my pump {which is not suitcase-space friendly} but I wanted the option to pump incase I wanted to get out and do some skiing. Becuase of this, I was able to leave Noah behind with his grammy's and go skiing all 3 days we were down there (only a few hours at a time though). I suggest bringing bottles that have a cap so they can travel easily.
All in all, we managed to get away with our two suitcases, 2 ski bags, Noah's bag, the pack 'n play and his swing. We had his diaper bag and boppy in the back seat.
